Intuition and The High Priestess

“Most of us are in touch with out intuition whether we know it or not, but we’re usually in the habit of doubting or contradicting it so automatically that we don’t even know it has spoken.”  –Shakti Gawain.

Intuition, what is it?  Intuition is the apparent ability to acquire knowledge without inference or the use of reason.  “The word ‘intuition’ comes from the Latin word ‘intueri’, which is often roughly translated as meaning ‘to look inside’ or ‘to contemplate’.”  Intuition provides us with beliefs that we cannot necessarily justify. For this reason, it has been the subject of study in psychology, as well as a topic of interest in the supernatural.

There are lots of definitions, but it all comes down to how each of us perceive and understand our own intuitive or inner voice.  The gut-feeling we have all experienced about a person, a place, or a decision we are faced with making.  The trick is to learn how to recognize it and to trust what it is telling you.

Its easy to look back and think, “That would have been a better decision or choice if I had gone with my first gut instinct.”  I don’t think there is anyone who hasn’t thought that at one time or another.

For the Tarot, Intuition is represented by The High Priestess.  She represents a spiritual knowledge that cannot be measured, contained, and quantified.  The Inner Voice.  She is the keeper of the secrets and mysteries.

Rachel Pollack on the High Priestess of The Shining Tribe:  “The High Priestess card reaches into many cultures, for she is not the priestess of any particular religion, but of the inner way of the soul.”

She Stays in One Place.

She swims in the water.

She talks with the serpents.

She knows all the secrets.

She says nothing.

She says nothing; Silence has another value—it contains that which is best left unspoken.  Advice given here would be to keep your own counsel and look inside for answers.  There is wisdom in knowing when to speak and when to say nothing.

The High Priestess card can signal something very deep awakened in us, especially psychic or spiritual awareness.  It reminds us to be silent, to look inward and contemplate stillness.  She reminds us to stay with ourselves, to trust our instincts and intuitions.

  1. What is deep within me?
  2. How can I know it?
  3. How can I be true to it?
  4. What do I need to give out?
  5. What do I need to keep within?
