Card by Card – Six of Pentacles

Radiant Rider-Waite - Six of Pentacles

If you missed the last Card by Card post on The Moon, you can read about it here.

Once again, I’ll be taking a look at several variations from different decks and gathering that particular Author and/or Artists thoughts and perspectives.

The Six of Pentacles is the randomly drawn COTW-card of the week.   What does it mean when you receive this card in a one card daily drawing or it turns up in a spread?

The first Six of Pentacles we will be looking at is from the Radiant Rider-Waite Tarot published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc. 2003.

“A person in a guise of a merchant weighs money in a pair of scales and distributes it to the needy and distressed.  It is a testimony to his own success in life, as well as to his goodness of heart.”  Divinatory Meanings:  Presents, gifts, gratification, another account says attention, vigilance, now is the accepted time, present prosperity, etc.   ~Arthur Edward Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot.

In The Complete Book of Tarot Reversals, Mary K. Greer has this to say on the Six of Pentacles.

“The Golden Dawn considered each Six as the peak of its suit and element.  Six is a number of harmony, reciprocity, and social concerns, just as a patron needs someone to patronize and a benefactor needs a recipient.  You could be giving or receiving money, gifts, or assistance.  You could be giving or receiving money, gifts, or assistance.  At worst this is a situation of dominance and submission, haves and have nots, token reforms, or codependency.  At best we have material abundance resulting in shared resources, cash flowing through all levels of society, and true charity with fairness and generosity.  What is being distributed need not be money-and so this card can also refer to scheduling, time management, and allocations of other resources.”

First up is the Six of Pentacles from the Anna.K Tarot by Anna Klaffinger (2nd edition Self-Published 2008,2010) & Six of Coins from the Simply Deep Tarot by Chanel Bayless and James Battersby (Schiffer Publications 2012)

Six of Pentalces - Anna.K Tarot & Simply Deep Tarot

Anna.K Tarot:  The Six of Pentacles is all about giving and taking.  It means to generously give that of which one has too much to those who have not enough.  It’s important that the card does not say on which side we are – we could be the one who gives or the one who takes.  Maybe it asks us to give full-heartedly, or maybe it means that we are in a situation  in which we have to beg others for something, and have to accept whatever they are willing to give.

Simply Deep Tarot:    Share your extra wealth with others.  If you have recently had a prosperous accomplishment, share it with those who look up to you.  Alternatively, you may need some advice or financial help.  Whichever side of the fence you are on, it doesn’t give you the right to choose the help you think will benefit them.

The next pair are from the Wizards Tarot by Corrine Kenner and John J. Blumen (Llewellyn Publications 2011) & The Art of Life Tarot Deck by Charlene Livingstone (U.S. Games Systems, Inc. 2012)

Six of Pentacles - Wizards Tarot & The Art of Life Tarot

Wizards Tarot:  The Six of Pentacles is a card of charitable giving.  Focus on this card when you want to receive your fair share of credit for a job well done, or to generate payments on a past-due account.  One student holds a scale in one hand, and with the other he drops coin-sized pentacles into the outstretched hands of two fellow students.  The young man’s scales aren’t perfectly balanced, but he’s in the process of leveling them out.  Traditionally, the Six of Pentacles represents charity and justice.

Art of Life Tarot Deck:  Generosity, charity.

The last pair are from The Sacred Circle Tarot by Anna Franklin and Paul Mason (Lewellyn Publications 2003) & the Cat’s Eye Tarot by Debra M. Givin, DVM (U.S. Games Systems, Inc. 2011)

Six of Pentacles - The Sacred Circle Tarot & the Cat's Eye Tarot

Sacred Circle Tarot: The Six of Discs indicates that you will be the beneficiary of someone else’s bounty.  Perhaps you will received a grand, an award or a monetary gift, or just some good advice.  This will put your financial affairs on a firmer footing and restore your waning faith in yourself.  This card calls on you to remember that you have been helped by the generosity of another, and that in turn you should be generous with your own time and advice when somone needs it.

Cat’s Eye Tarot:  This card is about more than charity.  It is about knowing what to give and how much.  It is about knowing what you need to receive and how to get it.  The Six of Pentacles is a return to the balance lost in the hard times of the Five of Pentacles.  You will receive what you need and what you deserve, no less, no more.  Having/Not Having; Resources; Knowledge; Power

Author Anna Burroughs Cook -Tarot Dynamics Unleashed – has this to say on Card 74, the Six of Pentacles.

“From money, to time and opportunity, the Six of Pentacles reminds you waste not, want not.  The more confidence you have in your abilities, the easier you can attract the attention of people who can advance your interests.  Although, “waste not, want not”, should be your motto, you’d still be wise to carefully examine any and all opportunities that might come knocking at your door.  If not, you could pay a higher price than you expected.”

“With Card 74 the busier you are, the better you’ll feel and the more you can accomplish for you, other people, and matters or foundations that are more deserving of your time, and efforts and generosity.”

Please join me over the next week as I’ll be looking at the Six of Pentacles more in depth and combined with a new COTD each day.  Stop over to the New Paths Tarot -Facebook page and get in the discussion!

I hope this has shed some new light and understanding on the Six of Pentacles!

Until next time, Happy Tarot’ing and May Your Journey always be Enchanted.
