Samhain – Tarot Blog-Hop

Hello and welcome to the Samhain (Halloween) Tarot Blog-Hop where we are celebrating the thinning of the veil and our Shadow selves.

If you would like to jump back one Hop just follow the link to Ania Marczyk’s wonderful blog.

For this Blog-Hop we were asked to explore our Shadow sides.  What exactly does that mean?  What is our Shadow side?

Carl Jung (1875-1961) was a Swiss psychologist and psychiatrist who founded analytical psychology. Jung proposed and developed the concepts of the extroverted and the introverted personality, archetypes, and the collective unconscious. His work has been influential in psychiatry and in the study of religion, literature, and related fields.

Jung believed the most powerful archetype to be the Shadow.  The Shadow contains the darker aspects of our character that have remained undeveloped because they have not been given expression.  Jung suggested these undeveloped feelings, ideas, and desires were sides of our psyches.  If neglected, our Shadow will rule us.  So powerful is the Shadow, Jung wrote, that if it is not attended to (i.e. made conscious), it will appear in the world around us as our fate.  (pg. 7 Tarot Shadow Work by Christine Jette)

So, now that you have a better understanding of what the term “Shadow” means when referring to our psyche, please allow me to share with you this Tarot spread that is designed to help you discover/identify your Shadow – Star of Discovery from the aforementioned book Tarot Shadow Work – Using the Dark Symbols to Heal by Christine Jette (Llewellyn Publications 2001).

The Star of Discovery

(Using only the Major Arcana)

  1. Denial:  What negatives or positives do people point out to me that I have trouble accepting?
  2. Anxiety:  When do I get nervous, anxious, touchy, or sensitive with others?
  3. Inferiority:  When do I most lack confidence?
  4. Anger:  What qualities in a person do I most dislike or have the most difficulty dealing with?
  5. Secrecy:  What do I rarely talk about with others?  What are my secrets and my family secrets?
  6. Self-loathing:  When am I most dissatisfied with myself?

These are the cards I drew from the Gilded Tarot Royale by Ciro Marchetti:

This is only a summary of this particular spread as the book goes into a lot more depth and detail.  But, this gives you the general idea behind the premise of “Shadow-work”.

Our Shadow self is ever growing and changing as is our physical/emotional self.  It is an ongoing life-long process (for the most part) to find harmony and balance between the dualities of self.  Yes, an ongoing process, but, a very worthwhile process indeed.  Discover your Shadow-self, embrace it, and integrate it into the self you know and the self you Think you know.

Samhain Blessings to you and yours!  May the veil be thin for your festivities, communication, and enjoyment.

Into the Twilight

Into the twilight and darkness of self

Where Demons reside and skillfully hide

Where acceptance is shunned and light is denied

All hope then is lost and no longer resides.

To delve to the depths, their lair to abide

These demons in twilight and darkness they hide

To fester and grow, UN-seemingly so

Deep shadows above as deep shadows below.

The gifts of the Shadow are wont to be seen,

But to discover these gifts, courage is deemed

At best to be present, at worst to be dreamed

And into the light of hope, they scream.

What lies in shadow often uncovered

Yearns to be heard and be discovered

Repressed far too long and kept under cover

These shadows of twilight and darkness, lived under.

Rearing their heads the demons will strive

To encroach into daylight, the Shadow revived

Denying existence adds fuel to the fire

Embracing acceptance tames demons desire.

These personal demons as Shadow’s surrender

Bring heart break and toil to those who are rendered

Victims to tortured souls of the lost

Now brought into light, will now share the cost.

To rid thee of Shadow that lurks unforgiving

Your light it must shine into corners unbidden

Illuminate that which would want to stay hidden

Embracing both Shadow and Light we have striven.

  1. I haven’t used this book in a while, what a good reminder. And a lovely, insightful poem, too. Thank you for sharing :)

  2. Another wonderful spread, thank you Koneta! I’ll be trying it out tonight, after all the ‘trick or treaters’ have finished…

  3. Jordan,
I love the dragon as shadow/beast analogy! :) A necessary beast, indeed. Thanks so much for your Shadow-response.

  4. Another excellent spread, Koneta! And I love the poem too. Too talented for your own good!

…and lets not forget The Rolling Stones. A band that knows a LOT about the Shadow side of themselves :-)

    Ali x

  5. Thank You for the spread which I am going to layer in as “The personality of the World of the Shadow” to what is becoming a relatively massive system of a spread growing across my TarotBlogHop experience.

Thank You, Koneta, for your spread and powerful shadow-rhythm gift of poetry . . . and in a dark and Shadowed Namaste, I will Shadow-respond to your poem:

Dedicated to our lost children of memories.
    There forever they shall reside,
    under a small lake,
    immeasurably deep,
lying high up in the mountains,
    where is brewed the thunder,
and in fair weather the dragon sleeps.

Ours is not a lot to be feared.
The dragon is a necessary beast.

    BOO! Happy Samhain!

  6. Love the book and just picked up my first on Jung and tarot symbols. Thanks so much for sharing this with us!
